On January 2008, the City of Santa Monica has contracted with Nelson / Nygaard Consulting Firm, to conduct an evaluation of key issues and concerns relative to taxi service in the City.This firm has been involved in creating several taxi franchises in the past,in various cities in California. City of Santa Monica is considering a taxi franchise for our city. "Franchise" is a agreement between the City and several taxi companies, depending on how big is the city.The purpose of franchise would be to regulate the taxi industry;have one meter rate,limit the number of taxi companies and drivers, specify the age and the condition of the taxicabs and some other stipulations that would improve the service and protect the public. As of now, we have to many cabs and to many companies which leeds to overcharging the public. In January 2008 when we all had a meeting in the main Santa Monica public library, the stats were; city of Santa Monica had 55 taxi companies with the population of 84.000, while City of Los Angeles with the population of 3.7 million, has 9 ( nine ) taxi companies!

In the region of 111 cities, Santa Monica is the only city WITHOUT A TAXI FRANCHISE. My fellow Santa Monicans, I believe it's the time!

My information is that by the end of 2009, we may have a taxi franchise. As you know, any changes of the city's rules and laws have to be finalized by the end of September in the previous year for it to take effect on January 1st of the next year. Our city is a complex one ( we all know about that) and therefore let us all do our part in accomplishing this challenge. IF and WHEN time comes, the City will be selecting from local and outside companies. Most of the outside companies, such as Yellow Cab, Beverly Hills Cab, United Independent, Bell Cab and many others, operate in more then one city. In order to operate the taxicab, one has to have a city's police permit (and in all other cities franchise permit ) of THAT city. These outside companies are usually large ( several hundred units ) and have permits to operate in several different cities. If something , for example, was happening in Hollywood area, it would be almost impossible to get a cab from that company in Santa Monica.Local companies can pick-up passengers only in the city of Santa Monica, and therefore, when they make a drop, let's say, Beverly Hills, they have to rush beck to Santa Monica to get a next load. This keeps the cars in the city; better service for our residence.

Here is why local companies are much better then the outside ones;

1. Local companies are smaller and therefore easier to properly manage.
2. Our drivers are more familiar with the city.
3. Our cars are cleaner and drivers speak conversational English.
4. Some local companies are big on environmental issues and alterative fuels.
5. None of the Santa Monica companies have the glass dividers inside their cabs.

If you have a city councilman or councilwoman that you correspond with, please make them aware that a taxi franchise in our city would be a good thing for everyone. The public would have more protection from overcharging ( to my knowledge it is becoming a serious problem ); the drivers would make their money easier and therefore would not have a need to overcharge; by removing some surplus of taxicabs the down-town traffic will drastically improve, ets.
